Charting the Course: 2023 Dialysis BSI Rebaseline

Important Message: SIR reports using 2023 Dialysis BSI rebaseline model are being added to the application in a phased approach. New educational materials are being posted to this webpage on a rolling basis as they become available. Some resources may be relevant for the SIR model that are not yet available in NHSN reports. Please check back regularly for ongoing updates.

Introduction

The NHSN Team is updating the national baseline used to calculate all bloodstream infections (BSI) standardized infection ratios (SIRs) in the Dialysis Component. This process of updating the national baseline, referred to as the “Rebaseline,” involves the NHSN team analyzing national data and creating updated risk adjustment model to be used in the calculations of future SIR.

The new baseline represents data reported to NHSN for 2023. New SIR reports, based on the 2023 national baseline, will be created in the NHSN application in a phased approach. Refer to the resources above for additional information, FAQs, and training opportunities.

The NHSN team remains committed to working with facilities to improve BSI prevention. Measuring progress under an updated national standard is important to understanding prevention efforts and standards in the current healthcare environment. The newly baselined data will continue to drive patient safety and the effort to reduce BSI rates.
