Building in the WCMS

Creating a Quiz

Overview

Understanding Feedback Types

Before building a quiz, it’s important to understand key terms related to feedback. This documentation uses the terms “question feedback” and “response feedback” (also known as “question-level feedback” and “response-level feedback”).

Question feedback is essentially canned feedback in the WCMS that indicates to the quiz taker whether a selected answer is correct or incorrect. For this feedback, the WCMS developer can select from several text options:

Available Feedback Responses
Question Answer Question Feedback
Correct Correct

Right

Good job

Incorrect Incorrect

Try again

You missed this one.

Response feedback is based on the quiz-taker’s selected answer and is totally customizable. This flexibility allows the quiz developer to provide the level of feedback that can distinguish a quiz in its communication effectiveness.

Feedback Mode: Question and Response Feedback

Important notes:

  • Question feedback does not display when there is no applicable response feedback for a selected answer.
  • There are two ways of entering response feedback. Both work for single-select questions, but only one works for multi-select questions. For more information, see the section Step 3: Add Quiz Content on page 7.

Guidelines and Tips

  • Quiz design. Make certain the quiz content provider understands how quizzes work from the quiz taker’s perspective. A non-WCMS user who is involved in quiz preparation may need a demonstration of how certain quiz options affect the display of quiz content and the quiz taker’s interactions with the quiz. Reviewing this documentation and the quiz prototypes can also help.
  • The importance of response feedback. A quiz is intended to support communication of health messages. Well-crafted response feedback is critical to this purpose. For this reason, response-level feedback is essentially required in that the quiz taker will not see a “correct” or “incorrect” indication unless response-level feedback is provided for the selected answer. For more information, see the sections Understanding Feedback Types on page 3.
  • Quiz testing. Always carefully review and test quizzes from the quiz taker’s perspective before pushing them live, and make certain the content provider is involved in the review.
  • Metrics. Note that metrics for quiz-level information are not being tracked at this time. (Pages containing quizzes are tracked like other pages.)

Process Overview

Once the quiz content has been designed and it’s time to create the quiz in the WCMS, follow these steps:

  1. Upload any images to display in the quiz.
  2. Create the quiz and add quiz content. Use the “New Content” option in the WCMS content browser to create the quiz element. See the sections below for information on completing the quiz form.
  3. Create a page.
  4. Add the quiz to a page.
  5. Save your page and preview.
  6. Review and test the quiz and tweak as necessary.
