Extreme Weather as an Emerging Public Health Challenge for Youth Sports

PEER REVIEWED

A conceptual framework illustrates the National Institutes of Health’s research priorities for protecting health from extreme weather. At the center are 5 goals: exposure research; risk assessment across the lifespan and populations; intervention science; research infrastructure, community engagement, and data sharing; and training and capacity building. These goals are connected through multidisciplinary and global collaboration. The framework also identifies supporting research areas including adaptation science, behavioral and social science, community-engaged research, data integration, epidemiology, exposomics, genomics, implementation science, longitudinal research, mechanistic science, nutrition research, and preparedness and resilience. The framework emphasizes an integrated approach to understanding extreme-weather exposures, identifying health risks, developing interventions, and strengthening preparedness and research capacity.
