Los Angeles County Department of Public Health

Los Angeles

Under the direction of Jonathan E. Fielding, MD, MPH, MBA, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Healthexternal icon is responsible for all public health functions including surveillance and control of both communicable and non-communicable diseases, and of health protection (including against bioterrorism) for the County’s 10 million residents. Our mission is to protect and improve the health of all Angelenos. This means providing citizens protection from the health threats such as food-borne illnesses, natural and man-made disasters, toxic exposures, and preventable injury. We conduct our activities through a network of public health professionals throughout the community. Every day, hundreds of public health measures protect the population of Los Angeles. Drinking safe water, vaccinating our children, and health education regarding the harmful effects of unprotected sex are examples of public health measures fundamental to good health.
