Food Insecurity in Delaware: A Triangulation of Spatial Data Sources

Two maps depict the burden of food insecurity and number of food pantries by zip code in New Castle County, Delaware. The maps show that food insecurity burden and food pantries are concentrated in northeastern New Castle County, particularly in zip codes 19801, 19802, and 19805. Other zip codes throughout the county have elevated burdens of food insecurity but relatively few food pantries.

The burden of food insecurity is highest in three zip codes (19801, 19802, and 19805) in northeastern New Castle County that also have relatively high numbers of food pantries. Food insecurity burden was estimated by using a summary score that combined patient screening data and American Community Survey data for household poverty and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation.
