Effect of Media Use on Adolescent Body Weight

PEER REVIEWED

Direct paths from hours of media use to sleep hours (β = −0.03, P = .008), timing of last food intake (β = 0.04, P = .002), and unhealthy eating behaviors (β = 0.15, P = <.001) were significant. The paths from sleep hours include timing of last food intake (β = −0.13, P = .01), unhealthy eating behaviors (β = −0.21, P = .27), and BMI (β = −3.42, P = <.001). The paths from timing of last food intake include unhealthy eating behaviors (β = −0.52, P = .03) and BMI (β = −2.28, P = .003). Lastly, the path from unhealthy eating behaviors includes BMI (β = −0.32, P = .08).

Direct paths from hours of media use include sleep hours (β = −0.02, P = .14), timing of last food intake (β = 0.06, P < .001), and unhealthy eating behaviors (β = 0.26, P = <.001). The paths from sleep hours include timing of last food intake (β = −0.22, P = .001), unhealthy eating behaviors (β = −0.06, P = .75), and BMI (β = −2.47, P = <.001). The paths from timing of last food intake include unhealthy eating behaviors (β = −0.66, P = .001) and BMI (β = −2.04, P = .002). Lastly, the path from unhealthy eating behaviors includes BMI (β = −0.36, P = .004).
