Youth Research Cohort Information

Youth Research Cohort

In December 2022, legislation was passed requiring the World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program to establish a new Youth Research Cohort. The purpose of this cohort is to enable future studies on the health, social, and educational impacts on persons aged 21 years or younger within a certain distance of the WTC site on and after 9/11.

The Program is currently in the first phase of its four-phase plan. We are developing ways to involve the 9/11 community and other external partners in the development of the Youth Research Cohort to ensure their participation throughout the process.

Authorizing Legislation

In December 2022, the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S.C. § 300mm–51(c)) amended section 3341(c) to include a Research Cohort for Emerging Health Impacts on Youth (individuals who were 21 years of age or younger on September 11, 2001).

Proposed Approach

The posted Federal Register Notice and the Request for Information are opportunities for the scientific, outreach, and industry communities to provide input throughout a four phased approach.
