It is with great sadness that CDC announces the death of Dr. Adaora Adimora.

Dr. Adimora was a dedicated member of the Advisory Committee to the Director and a transformative leader who tirelessly championed for women’s health. She was a Sarah Graham Kenan Distinguished Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine and Professor of Epidemiology at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.

Dr. Adimora also served as principal investigator of the UNC site of the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study-Women’s Interagency HIV Study Combined Cohort Study (MACS/WIHS CCS) and co-director of the UNC Center For AIDS Research where she worked for decades to study and impact racial and gender disparities in HIV care. She served on the NIAID Advisory Council, the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, the DHHS Antiretroviral Guidelines Panel, the International AIDS Society’s Governing Council, and as chair of the HIV Medicine Association. She was an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine.

We cherish our time with Dr. Adimora and will continue to be inspired by her own words, “Do what you like, what’s important and what’s right.” Our thoughts are with her family and colleagues.
