Tuberculosis (TB) in the United States by the numbers:

8,331: reported TB cases in the United States in 2022 (a rate of 2.5 cases per 100,000 persons)

60: jurisdictions (e.g., states, cities, U.S. territories, and affiliated areas) that report TB data to CDC

Up to 13 million: estimated number of people in the United States living with latent TB infection

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, TB case counts and incidence rates had been steadily decreasing in the United States since 1992. During 2020, TB case counts and incidence rates declined substantially, likely because of factors associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, TB case counts and incidence partially rebounded, but remained lower compared with 2019. In 2022, reported TB cases and incidence rates increased for the second year in a row, but remained lower compared with 2019 prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic shift over time, we must rededicate our efforts and resources to achieve elimination of TB in the United States. Ending TB will require a dual approach of maintaining and strengthening efforts to diagnose and treat TB disease and latent TB infection, especially in populations at increased risk for TB disease.
