Leveraging Artificial Intelligence in Health and Healthcare

During February’s Preventive Medicine Grand Rounds, Peter Elkin, MD, will discuss key studies highlighting the principles and methods of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine–learning used to improve the safety and quality of healthcare. He will explain how using AI models in bio–surveillance can save lives and money. This presentation will also help preventive medicine trainees and professionals know when and how to collaborate with biomedical informatics professionals to maximize their contributions to achieve their public health goals.

Dr. Elkin is the founding chair of the University at Buffalo’s Department of Biomedical Informatics, in Buffalo, New York. He has been working in biomedical informatics since 1981 and has been actively researching big data health science since 1987. He is an internationally renowned expert in knowledge representation, applied ontology (the philosophical study of being), natural language processing, and health information technology (IT) standards. Dr. Elkin has authored over 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters. He was the first person to demonstrate that the quality of care a physician is providing for their patient can be reliably measured. The interoperability measures Dr. Elkin endorsed as Chair of the Population Health Technical Committee of the Health Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP) for Health and Human Services (HHS) led to the data-sharing standards associated with the 21st Century Cures Act.
