Commemorating the 2026 National Day of Service and Remembrance

As we reflect on the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we remember and honor the survivors, the brave responders whose courage and sacrifice continue to inspire our nation, and the victims who died that day.

Tragically, many more men and women have lost their lives because of the health impacts stemming from 9/11. We honor their memories today and every day.

We also reflect with gratitude on the efforts of responders, survivors, and their supporters whose determined advocacy led to Congress establishing the World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program in 2011 and authorizing it through 2090.

In the decades since that day, the 9/11 community continues to face WTC-related health conditions with resilience and hope. We are grateful to be able to provide them with specialized care to address these health challenges. Our mission at the WTC Health Program also includes evaluating health outcomes on the 9/11 impacted population to identify ways we can improve their treatment and care.

Yesterday, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published a paper by Program staff that examines lessons learned in the quarter century since 9/11 . The paper reflects on the courage and sacrifice of those selfless responders who answered the call of duty, as well as those who lived, worked, or went to school or daycare in the New York City Disaster Area. It also provides insights on how the Program makes a real difference in helping to improve quality of life and positive health outcomes among our members.

Disaster-related health effects are long-term, complicated, and ever-changing. On this 25th commemoration, we renew our commitment to our nearly 150,000 members receiving specialized care for their certified WTC-related health conditions. We also continue our efforts to reach many more survivors and responders who have not realized their health conditions today could be linked to 9/11 and that help is available.
