Influenza vaccine information

Influenza viruses change from year to year, so influenza vaccines are usually updated annually to include the viruses that will most likely circulate in the upcoming season. Once the viruses are selected for the new formulation, private manufacturers produce, test, release and distribute influenza vaccines.

Influenza vaccines are produced and supplied by private manufacturers. For the 2026-2027 season, vaccine manufacturers have projected that they will supply the United States with 135 million doses of influenza vaccines. These projections may change as the season progresses. All influenza vaccines for the current season will be trivalent (three component). Most (99%) will not include thimerosal as a preservative, and most (73%) will be egg-based.
