Suicide was responsible for 48,824 deaths in 2024. 1The number of people who think about or attempt suicide is even higher. In 2024, an estimated 14.3 million adults seriously thought about suicide, 4.6 million planned a suicide attempt, and 2.2 million attempted suicide.2

Suicide rates by race/ethnicity

The racial/ethnic groups with the highest suicide rates in 2024 were non-Hispanic American Indian and Alaska Native people and non-Hispanic White people.3

Suicide rates by sex

The suicide rate among males in 2024 was nearly four times higher than the rate among females.4

Suicide rates by age

People ages 80 and older had the highest rates of suicide in 2024.5
