Cutover to Production: Transitioning from GenV2 Messages to Condition-specific Messages
This page provides information for jurisdiction health departments sending data to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS) that are:
- already in production for the generic version 2 (GenV2) message mapping guide (MMG) and
- ready to begin transmitting condition-specific HL7 messages.
Onboarding Flags
When a jurisdiction is already in production for the GenV2 MMG, the data source in the MVPS portal for its HL7 messages is set to “Production (P).”
When a jurisdiction is ready to transmit its condition-specific MMG HL7 messages to the MVPS production environment during the onboarding cutover to production stage, the data source will remain as “Production (P).”
For CDC programs accessing data from MVPS views, you must filter messages using the condition-specific message profile identifier and the date when year-to-date messages started to be received in MVPS production. When your program accesses the data via MVPS views, you’ll see that these messages will update the existing cases. MVPS will also annotate the most recent message for each case with a “current record flag” = “Y.” Additional updates to these messages may occur if the case data are corrected during review.
Notification of Incoming Year-to-Date (YTD) Data
The NNDSS onboarding specialist will notify MVPS that your jurisdiction is preparing to send updated production YTD messages to the MVPS production environment with the condition-specific MMG profile and MVPS will make changes to receive the new message profile for approved conditions.
Cutover-to-Production Meeting
The NNDSS onboarding specialist will schedule a meeting with your jurisdiction, the CDC program, and any additional partners needed. This meeting will:
- discuss the transition to submitting updated production YTD messages to the MVPS production environment using the condition-specific message profile and
- review the best ways to use the MVPS dashboard to see messages.
YTD Validation
Submit updated production YTD messages with the condition-specific message profile to the MVPS production environment. These messages are used to populate CDC production databases with the unreconciled data in the new MMG format.
CDC considers your jurisdiction in production for the new MMG at this stage. Send all new cases with the condition-specific message profile while CDC assesses year-to-date messages for errors. Unlike the transition from a legacy format to a new format, CDC will continue to include your jurisdiction’s data in NNDSS publications during this transition.
