About the Provisional Data

Purpose

Provisional data reports provide an early analysis of tuberculosis (TB) case data reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the prior year. These reports are released around World TB Day (March 24), in advance of the annual TB surveillance report typically released later in the fall.

Description

Each year, the 50 U.S. states and Washington D.C. report TB cases to CDC's National Tuberculosis Surveillance System (NTSS). Provisional data include national and jurisdiction-specific case counts in addition to counts and incidence rates by birth origin, race and ethnicity, and age group. U.S. Census Bureau population estimates were used to calculate rates (cases per 100,000 persons) of TB disease. Provisional analyses are limited in that TB case counts and rates may change as data are finalized later in the year.
