What to know

Get the data story
The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has released the 2025 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) public-use files. These files provide the most current data on chronic conditions, chronic pain, healthcare access, and disability, based on information collected from more than 25,000 households. They include survey questions, responses, and nonidentifying information about respondents to protect privacy.
What is NHIS?
NHIS is an annual survey that collects information from adults and children on a variety of health topics. It helps doctors, journalists, researchers, and policymakers track health trends and guide medical advice and policy.
NHIS data can answer questions like—
- Where do most people get their health insurance?
- How do people use the Internet to get medical information?
- Are cancer screenings common?
- In what ways do people manage pain?
What's new in the 2025 survey
The 2025 survey included questions about social connection and isolation, menopausal health, and caregiving.
The survey description provides details on how NHIS topics were selected. You can explore the files to learn how the survey was developed, request access to restricted detailed data, and run your own analyses.
Available products and tools
We also want to make it easy for you to incorporate the most recent national estimates in your communications. Updated 2025 estimates are available in the NCHS Data Query System (DQS). Our User Guide provides instructions on how to filter DQS by data source to help you find NHIS estimates.
Give feedback and get updates
NCHS is seeking feedback on a planned redesign for the 2028 survey to modernize data collection and make participation easier. This is an important opportunity for people to have a say in the future of the nation's oldest and largest household health survey. Written comments must be received on or before October 20, 2026.
