How the Meeting Advanced the Mission of the Agency: TEPHINET’s scientific conferences combine both scientific sessions and workshops related to managing public health systems and training programs. It’s CDC’s mission to keep people safe and bolstered by the Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP), which trains a global workforce of field epidemiologists. The annual TEPHINET global conference brings together this profession network of FETPs to share their work with international public health experts. FETP trainees benefit from the experience of presenting their work to an international audience of experts. Public health officials make valuable contacts that they can work collaboratively with. Overall, these conferences are an opportunity to learn from the experience of others and to acquire new ideas and skills that can be put into action.

DHIS2 Annual Conference 2022

How the Meeting Advanced the Mission of the Agency: The DHIS2 Annual Conference is our biggest yearly event and provides an opportunity for the global DHIS2 community — a diverse group including implementers, developers, ministry representatives, technical partners, donors, and other DHIS2 experts from around the world — to meet and share experiences with DHIS2, learn about the latest developments and innovations, and make connections that can lead to new partnerships and collaborations. CDC works closely and provides funding to the University of Oslo to support the development of DHIS2. This support has led to the COVID surveillance package and vaccine management that is used in over 40 countries. In addition, every division in CGH works with Oslo for their program specific activities and to provide support to our partner countries; also, other divisions like CDC work with them such as DGMQ on POE and border surveillance. For DGHP, we work with them on IDSR, AFI, lab/surveillance integration, EBS, and more. DGHT works with them on PEPFAR indicators surveillance, DPDM on PMI reporting, and GID on VPD surveillance. This is a very important partner for CDC and how we provide support to countries. Over 80 countries are using this software for surveillance which amounts to over 2 billion people being served.

Global Health Security 2022

How the Meeting Advanced the Mission of the Agency: Global Health Security 2022 (GHS 2022) is the second ever international conference on global health security. It is the largest gathering of its kind since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, and will be the largest gathering of global health security practitioners, researchers, educators, representatives and decision-makers across the fields of public health, medicine, veterinary science, agriculture, government, defense, international relations, sociology and anthropology to examine the progress made to date in strengthening health systems and identify the gaps and opportunities for enhancing the international community’s ability to respond more efficiently and effectively to future adverse health crises. GHS 2022 presents an important opportunity for CDC to showcase its success and leadership in the advancement of global health security, a CDC priority. The GHS 2022 provides CDC staff that work in GHS with an effective means to share their findings, influence scientific discourse and policy discussions, and receive updates from others in the scientific and greater global health security community.

IAS 2022, The 24th International AIDS Conference

International Conference on AIDS and STI’s in Africa (ICASA 2021)

How the Meeting Advanced the Mission of the Agency: The convening of the International Conference on AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections in Africa (ICASA 2021) in December 2021 represents a tremendous opportunity to highlight the diverse nature of the African region’s HIV epidemic and the unique response to it. In an inclusive context, according to the 2020 Global Fund COVID 19 Funding report, the emergence of the Corona virus (COVID-19) pandemic is having a catastrophic impact on the most vulnerable communities around the world and threatens progress made in mitigating the impact of HIV, TB and malaria globally. Through grant savings and reprogramming of HIV, TB and malaria programs, over US$500 million has been allocated to the COVID-19 Response Mechanism. As such, this creates a gap in the fight to mitigate the impacts on lifesaving HIV, TB and malaria programmes, leading to fragile health systems being overwhelmed. A disease like COVID-19 threatens us all. However, we must not relent in our goal for an AIDS free Africa. It is imperative for the continent to rely on the dynamics of recent scientific advances, on a plea that will respond to a mobilization of internal and endogenous resources. The biennial International AIDS Conference is the premier gathering for all working in the field of Health as well as leaders, people living with HIV and others committed to ending the epidemic. It will be a tremendous opportunity for researchers, clinicians from around the world to share the latest scientific advances, learn from one another’s expertise, and develop strategies for advancing all facets of our collective efforts to end AIDS by 2030.

36th Annual Plenary and Working Group Meeting & HL7 FHIR Connectathon

How the Meeting Advanced the Mission of the Agency: HL7 FHIR Connectathons is a two-day event of hands-on FHIR development and testing held in conjunction with Working Group Meetings. This event provides a great opportunity for implementers and developers to gain hands-on experience developing FHIR-based solutions by participating in one of many available tracks. HL7 International Working Group Meetings (WGMs) are held three times per year at varying locations and serve two important purposes: 1) Provide the HL7 International work groups the opportunity to meet in person and work on standards, as well as to network with industry leaders from around the world. 2) Offer an invaluable educational resource for the healthcare IT community. HL7 International has more than 40 work groups dedicated to specialized areas of interest such as Fast Health Interoperability Resources (FHIR) Infrastructure, Mobile Health and Electronic Health Records. These work groups are directly responsible for the content of standards and spend much of their time at WGMs hard at work on standards development. Attending a WGM is a great way to learn about a particular area, and everyone attending a WGM is invited to any of the work group meetings.

CSTE 2022 Annual Conference

How the Meeting Advanced the Mission of the Agency: The CSTE Annual Conference connects more than 2,500 public health epidemiologists from across the country and will include workshops, plenary sessions with leaders in the field of public health, oral breakout sessions, roundtable discussions, and poster presentations. Conference attendees meet and share their expertise in surveillance and epidemiology as well as best practices in a broad range of areas including informatics, infectious diseases, substance use, immunizations, environmental health, occupational health, chronic disease, injury control, and maternal and child health. During the conference, CSTE members vote on position statements, which instigate nationwide policy change and create new initiatives.
Description of Exceptional Circumstances: CDC is the lead public health agency in the Nation and internationally and sets best practices and procedures in the field of epidemiology. CDC’s presence at this conference will allow the Agency to present on these best practices and be part of the discussions that will set policies and procedures on data collection and surveillance strategies. The goal of this conference is one of the key missions of the Agency.
CDC also has a cooperative agreement (CoAg) with CSTE through the Partners’ Umbrella CoAg in CSTLTS. Several CIOs fund numerous projects within the CoAg which are monitored by project officers, subject matter experts, and technical monitors. The conference allows these monitors to connect in person with the CSTE project leads on the ongoing projects through one-on-one meetings and presentations.

Attendance at this scientific conference will support partnership with an important audience and will provide a forum for our staff to present recent research findings as well as participate in several working meetings. This meeting is an opportunity to communicate work done at CDC to Diabetes Care and Education Specialists who provide care to people with diabetes and prediabetes. The NCCDPHP and CDC have a long-standing partnership with ADCES in several areas designed to advance research and practice in the prevention and management of diabetes and related disorders, as well as care for people with diabetes and prediabetes. ICEID rich scientific program is made up of a variety of educational formats that will include, (but not limited to), plenary sessions, panel sessions, poster sessions, tours and oral presentations. ICEID’s unique ability to bring together highly skilled scientists with varied experiences both domestically and internationally in collaboration on some of the most ‘hot button’ issues affecting the emergence, spread, and control of infectious disease will allow CDC attendees the opportunity to stay abreast of the most recent information on this subject matter resulting in them being able to share that information with agency colleagues and partners allowing them to further CDC’s overall mission of strengthening public outreach.
Description of Exceptional Circumstances: ICEID is CDC’s preeminent conference on emerging infectious diseases, crossing multiple scientific disciplines in public and clinical health. Registration fees are collected by an external partner (the Task Force for Global Health) to reduce conference expenses and federal government employees are offered a discounted cost.

This is the premier meeting in the field of negative strand RNA viruses. The conference is limited in size to approximately 400 participants, with presentations that cover all aspects of the fundamental biology of negative strand RNA viruses. This is the 18th meeting of a conference that started in 1969. We continue in the spirit of previous meetings and there will be no invited speakers or concurrent sessions. Since the last meeting in Verona, Italy many in our community have made significant contributions to research on SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19.

They will connect regularly through recurring meetings and engage in use of the Community of Practice to stay in-touch throughout the program year.

How the Meeting Advanced the Mission of the Agency: The Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) is a national organization that represents community-based coalitions across the country that are working to prevent substance use. CADCA offers a national platform to engage current and former coalitions funded through the Drug Free Communities (DFC) support program, and interact with state and local organizations, as well as federal government agencies around community-based youth substance use prevention. The Mid-Year Training Institute offers in-depth, interactive training sessions geared specifically for community coalition leaders and staff and is held in a different city each year in either late July or early August. Through its role as day-day manager of the DFC program, CDC works closely with CADCA to provide guidance on the latest evidence-based strategies to address youth substance use at the community level, often through the National Leadership Forum and Mid-Year Training Institute opportunities.

With continued training restrictions due to the pandemic, it is the only opportunity for many of the officers to complete their specific education and training requirements needed to earn their continuing education credits. This event is the only annual meeting vital to the work of U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps officers. The conference provides the opportunity for partnership and collaboration among the ranks to hear from senior leaders and agency partners.
