Vaccine 2D Barcode Scanning Implementation Toolkit
The Vaccine 2D Barcode Scanning Implementation Toolkit is a series of resources and tools that may support different aspects of vaccine 2D barcode scanning implementation in ambulatory clinics, health care facilities, pharmacies, and health systems. Resources were developed for various roles of the implementation team and for various phases of implementation. The following resources are listed in the order they may be referenced during implementation. Navigate to the resources or tools that best fit your needs.
Deciding if vaccine 2D barcode scanning is right for your organization?
Implementation Guide for Decision Makers [1.6 MB, 70 pages] describes steps for decision makers of healthcare clinics or organizations considering implementation of vaccine 2D barcode scanning. This guide is based on the findings from the 2D Vaccine Barcode Scalability Pilot.
Leading the project of vaccine 2D barcode scanning?
Guide for Project Lead [1 MB, 25 pages] is intended for the individual leading the implementation and addresses all aspects of planning for the implementation of vaccine 2D barcode scanning. The Guide references other resources and tools in the Toolkit.
Performing the technical implementation of vaccine 2D barcode scanning?
Technical Implementation Guide: Vaccine Administration [1 MB, 26 pages] is a guide for technology and hardware needs and recommendations for implementing 2D barcode scanning for vaccine administration.
Technical Implementation Guide: Vaccine Inventory [1 MB, 28 pages] is a guide for technology and hardware needs and recommendations for implementing 2D barcode scanning for vaccine inventory.
Incorporating vaccine 2D barcode scanning into your workflow?
Workflow Determination Tool [11 pages] is a tool that includes activities, tips, and process maps to support the incorporation of 2D barcode scanning into the vaccine administration workflow. The Lessons Learned [5 pages] supplement provides key tips and data from the 2D Vaccine Barcode Scalability Pilot (2015-2017).

- Brief: Different Vaccine Lot Numbers [2 pages] describes the background and challenges of different vaccine lot numbers on the unit of sale (UoS) vaccine product (package or salable box) and the unit of use (UoU) vaccine product (e.g., vial, syringe). The brief describes current tools, ongoing efforts, and plans to update information related to this issue.
- Updated Guidance for Documenting Vaccine National Drug Codes (NDCs) and Lot Numbers in IISs and EHRs (June 2017) [3 pages] includes guidance for both immunization providers and immunization information system (IIS) managers, with clarification on UoU and UoS data, reconstituted vaccines, and various presentations of one vaccine.
- Adopting 2D Barcodes: Information for Pharmacies [2 pages] is a one-page brief providing information to pharmacists on the benefits of scanning 2D barcodes on vaccine products and the importance of adopting those barcodes in pharmacies.
Training materials currently include four videos on how to use 2D barcode scanners: features and benefits, scanning instructions, scanner maintenance, and next steps.
