Acrylonitrile is a high-volume chemical primarily used in the manufacturing of synthetic fibers, resins, plastics, elastomers, and rubber for a variety of consumer goods. It is also applied as a fumigant. In 1990, acrylonitrile was ranked 38th among the top 50 chemicals produced in the United States; an estimated 3.03 billion pounds (~1.4 billion kilograms) is manufactured annually.
