Minnesota’s High Prevalence Counties with Arthritis, Physical Inactivity, and Mobility Disability and Arthritis-Appropriate Evidence-Based Intervention Sites

Chronic Disease Map Gallery

At a glance

The map shows the current distribution of in-person arthritis-appropriate evidence-based programming in Minnesota. This map also highlights county-level adult population density and counties with high prevalence of arthritis, physical inactivity and mobility disability, which are key considerations for program planning and expansion.

Map

Minnesota's high prevalence counties with arthritis, physical inactivity, and mobility disability and arthritis-appropriate evidence-based intervention sites.
This map has four small multiples that display county-level arthritis, physical inactivity, and mobility disability, as well as county-level adult population displayed as dot density, for the state of Minnesota. For all three conditions, counties with the highest prevalence fall outside of the 7-county metro area. The dot density map shows that the majority of adults 18+ reside within the 7-county metro area.

The map also contains a state-level and a 7-county metro inset map that highlight counties with high prevalence of arthritis, physical inactivity, and mobility disability, and display the distribution of adult population and in-person Arthritis-Appropriate Evidence-Based Intervention sites. Many of Trellis' in-person arthritis-appropriate physical activity sites are within Minnesota's 7-county metro area, where population of eligible potential participants (adults) is also the highest. It is important to note that counties with high prevalence of one or more of the conditions mapped lie outside of the metro area and have a lower adult population density, which may be a factor in planning how to best engage with people from these areas.

The small multiples were prepared using prevalence data from CDC's PLACES data. A spatial join was performed on the prevalence data. A definition query was used to display the top 25% of counties in one, two, or all three conditions. Trellis AAEBI site addresses were geocoded using StreetMap Premium software within ArcGIS Pro.

This map has been used to document existing in-person evidence-based physical activity programming in Minnesota and illustrate opportunities to better reach counties or areas with high burden of arthritis, physical inactivity, and/or mobility disability. The map also overlays population density for adults 18+, which is a factor in considering where demand might be high enough to establish new programs or do targeted promotion of online programming.
