Small Multiples – Charts & Maps

The Small Multiples panel allows a user to set specific features affecting how Small Multiples charts and maps display.

Where to Use

Visualization Types

The Small Multiples panel displays the fields available for:

Charts:

  • Line Chart
  • Area Chart
  • Bar Chart (Note: Small Multiples only work with vertical bars)
  • Combination Bar/Line Chart
  • Box-and-Whiskers Plot
  • Scatter Plot

Maps:

  • United States Map
  • HHS Region Map
  • U.S. State Map

Common Fields

Tile Mode

  • By Data Series: Choose this to create a tile for each configured data series.
  • By Column Values: Choose this to create a tile for each unique value in the selected column.

Tiles Per Row

  • Desktop: Enter the number of tiles per row to display on desktop screens. Maximum value is 3.
  • Note: Mobile view always displays one tile per row.

Tile Order: Select one of 3 ways to display the tile order.

  • Ascending by Title
  • Descending by Title
  • Custom

Color Mode: Choose colors for lines and shaded areas.

  • Same Color: Uses the first color from the palette selected in the Visual>Chart Color Palette tab.
  • Different Colors: Each tile will use the next color in the configured color palette.

Custom Tile Titles: When tiling by values in a column, these fields automatically populate from the data file and are editable.

Independent Y-Axis Scales: When checked the y-axis scale for each tile will be calculated separately.

Synchronized Tooltips: When checked, hovering over one chart will show synchronized tooltips on all other charts at the same data point.

Visualization-Specific Settings

Line Charts

Shade Area Under Lines: When checked, each tile chart will display a shaded area underneath the line.

Maps

Tile by Column: Select the column whose unique values will create separate map tiles. Choosing a column will enable small multiples mode.
