Overview
While no official Section 508 or WCAG standard currently exists for interactive maps or data visualizations, components from existing guidelines and best practices are used to establish a standard to enhance our data visualization offerings within COVE. Effective visualization accessibility strategy starts with understanding the purpose and supported user tasks.
- Visual elements have good color contrast and don't rely on color for meaning
- Controls have meaningful labels, including visible text as well as programmatically available
- Text descriptions and instructions are used throughout
- Prioritize keyboard accessibility for functional elements
- Provide compliant alternate versions (CAV) to give users multiple ways to understand information
Features
COVE uses an inclusive design approach prioritizing these elements:
- Most interactive elements are keyboard and assistive technology accessible
- Text descriptions are recommended or required per visualization type
- Text labels for chart and map elements are available and recommended
- Colorblind safe palette available
- Compliant alternate version (CAV) required for all visualizations
- Ongoing testing, fixes, and enhancements with every release
Requirements
Compliant alternate version of content requirement for Section 508 compliance is achieved through accessible data tables with accompanying data download as CSV.
Content owners are encouraged to provide enhanced CAV such as additional pages with simplified images and further description of data trends.
