CDC Division of Adolescent and School Health Leadership Announcement

January 13, 2014

Dear Colleagues:

I am delighted to announce that beginning January 20, 2014, Captain Stephanie Zaza, MD, MPH, FACPM, will serve as the Director of the Division of Adolescent and School Health, National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention, CDC. Dr. Zaza is an experienced, thoughtful, and innovative public health leader.

She most recently served as Director of the Epidemiology and Analysis Program Office (EAPO) where she led scientific support services including the MMWR, CDC Vital Signs, Epi InfoTM, the Guide to Community Preventive Services, and the Public Health Library and Information Center. Prior to her appointment as EAPO Director, Dr. Zaza was the Acting Deputy Director and the Strategy and Innovation Officer in the Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response. She also served as Director of Steps to a Healthier U.S. at CDC’s National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion and as Chief of the Community Guide Branch at the former Epidemiology Program Office, which synthesized scientific literature and made recommendations about community-based interventions, including many that are applicable to adolescent populations and school settings.

Dr. Zaza served in multiple leadership roles during pandemic exercises from 2007–2009 and during the 2009 H1N1 and 2013 H7N9 pandemic responses. She is board certified in general preventive medicine and public health, was stationed during her preventive medicine residency at the Hawaii State Department of Health, and joined CDC as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer in the Hospital Infections Program in 1991. She received her MPH at Johns Hopkins University and a joint BS/MD degree from Youngstown State University and Northeast Ohio Medical University.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Zaza to this important position. I want to express my deep appreciation to Dr. John Moore for his excellent work as Acting Division Director during the interim period.

Sincerely,

/Jonathan Mermin/
