Role at CDC
CAPT Deron Burton, MD, JD, MPH, has held a variety of leadership roles during his almost 20-year CDC career, most recently serving as deputy director of CDC’s National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP). Previously, CAPT Burton served as director of NCHHSTP’s Office of Health Equity, where he led development of the Center’s Equity Initiative. Prior to joining the NCHHSTP Office of the Director, CAPT Burton was team lead for Methodology and Analysis, Clinical Research Branch, in NCHHSTP’s Division of Tuberculosis Elimination.
Previous experience
He has worked overseas as head of International Emerging Infections Program activities in western Kenya through the Center for Global Health. He also served as special advisor for Infectious Diseases to the CDC director, and as associate director for Health Equity in CDC’s former National Center for Health Marketing. His extensive and varied leadership roles in research, science, equity, and programs will be assets to our mission. His collaborative leadership will further enhance our center’s goals and priorities.
Education
CAPT Burton is board certified in preventive medicine, having completed CDC’s Preventive Medicine Residency Program assigned to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. CAPT Burton received his medical doctorate from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2003, a master of public health degree from Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2002, and his juris doctor degree from UCLA School of Law in 1995.
