E. coli Outbreak Linked to Raw Milk Cheese

CDC, FDA, and public health officials in several states are investigating a multistate outbreak of E. coli infections linked to Graziers raw milk cheeses sold by Sierra Nevada Cheese Company. Over half of the sick people in this outbreak are children 5 years old and younger. These products have a long shelf life. Check your homes for any of the recalled cheese. If you have any, throw them out or return them.

Sierra Nevada Cheese Company recalled all Glaziers raw milk cheese

Recalled Sierra Nevada Graziers grass-fed raw milk cheeses: medium cheddar, sharp cheddar, jalapeño jack, and Monterey jack sold at retail in 8-oz or 16-oz packages and available to food service customers or wholesalers in 5-lb loaves.

What you should do

  • Do not eat any recalled cheeses. Throw them away or return them.
  • Consider washing items and surfaces that may have touched the recalled cheeses using hot soapy water or a dishwasher.

Seek care for these symptoms

Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of these symptoms:

  • Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102°F
  • Diarrhea for more than 2 days that is not improving
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • So much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down
  • Signs of dehydration, such as:
    • Not peeing much
    • Dry mouth and throat
    • Feeling dizzy when standing up

Tip

What businesses should do

  • Do not sell or serve recalled raw milk cheeses.
  • Wash and sanitize items and surfaces that may have come in contact with recalled raw milk cheeses.

Symptoms of E. coli

  • Most people infected with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli experience severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and vomiting.
  • Some people may develop serious kidney problems (hemolytic uremic syndrome, also called HUS) and would need to be hospitalized.
