On Friday, May 21, 2004, the 2003 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System was released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In a comprehensive surveillance summary the report reveals the percentage of high school students who reported current cigarette smoking—which had increased from 28% in 1991 to 36% in 1997—fell to 22% in 2003.
