Information for Travelers

As an international traveler, it is important to know what to do if you develop a diarrheal illness, be aware of how you can get cholera, and what you can do to avoid getting it. The most important way to prevent cholera is to practice safe food and water precautions and frequent handwashing, as described on our Five Basic Cholera Prevention Steps page.

CDC recommends that adults traveling to areas with active cholera transmission get vaccinated with a newly licensed cholera vaccine (Vaxchora®, PaxVax Corporation). Vaxchora® prevents severe diarrhea caused by the most common type of cholera bacteria. Check CDC’s Travel Health Notices website to identify areas with active cholera transmission. Talk to your doctor about vaccination if you will be traveling to one of these areas.
