California and Iowa Licensed Registered Nurses (RNs)

Registered nurses in California and Iowa can receive continuing education contact hours.

  • California: The California Board of Nursing will accept CDC’s ANCC contact hours for self-study courses. However, it will not accept ANCC contact hours for courses offered within the state of California. When applying for re-licensure using ANCC contact hours, write in “ANCC self-study.” You do not need a provider number.
  • Iowa: As of 1/1/2018, for nurses to receive credit for a live course presented using distance learning technologies, such as teleconferences or webinars, and watched at a site within Iowa, an Iowa Board of Nursing-approved provider, a provider approved by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), or a provider approved by another board of nursing in a mandatory continuing education state must be involved in the approval of the offering.Courses taken as self-study or a video-taped event over the Internet, are acceptable if they are either covered by an approved Iowa provider, granted special approval, are approved by the ANCC, the NLN, the NFLPN, NAPNES, or if they are approved by a board of nursing in another mandatory continuing education state. The certificate must clearly show where the event was held. Reference: IAC 655, Chapter 5 – 5.2(5)
