Management structure for school screening
The South Dakota Department of Health (DOH) procures personal protective equipment and testing materials for K-12 school districts that participate in DOH-sponsored testing programs. DOH provides storage and distribution capabilities for testing and PPE supplies. DOH also provides education to K-12 school districts to support safe and accurate antigen testing in K-12 schools. DOH provides educational (digital and/or print) and testing materials for both in-school and at-home COVID-19 testing opportunities.
Support provided to school districts
K-12 school districts voluntarily enrolled in one or both of the following programs: in-school diagnostic testing using the Abbott BinaxNOW antigen test card, and/or at-home screening testing using the Quidel QuickVue OTC antigen test.
Each testing program is estimated to impact 100,000 students and adults in South Dakota K-12 schools. DOH stressed the importance to participate in both diagnostic and screening programs. The diagnostic testing program was very successful in the 2020-2021 school year with over 12,000 tests performed. It is anticipated the diagnostic program will be just as successful during the 2021-2022 school year.
