Number of crew who have reported being ill during the voyage out of total number of crew onboard: 0 of 455 (0%)

Predominant symptoms: diarrhea, vomiting

Causative agent: norovirus

Actions: In response to the outbreak, Viking Ocean Cruises and the crew aboard the ship reported the following actions:

  • Increasing cleaning and disinfection procedures according to their outbreak prevention and response plan.
  • Collecting stool specimens from passenger and/or crew gastrointestinal illness cases for testing.
  • Making twice daily reports of gastrointestinal illness cases to VSP.
  • Consulting with VSP on plans for their comprehensive sanitation cleaning procedures in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on January 28, 2019.

A VSP epidemiologist along with environmental health officers boarded the ship in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on January 28, 2019, and conducted an epidemiologic investigation and environmental health assessment and evaluation of the outbreak and response activities.
