Hepatitis Awareness Month
The month of May is designated as Hepatitis Awareness Month in the United States, and May 19th is Hepatitis Testing Day. During May, CDC and our public health partners work to shed light on the impact of these hidden epidemics by raising awareness of viral hepatitis while encouraging testing and vaccination. Hepatitis Awareness Month activities help to improve everyone’s understanding of viral hepatitis transmission and risk factors and to decrease social stigma against viral hepatitis.
Get involved
CDC will focus on three themes this Hepatitis Awareness Month. We encourage you to incorporate these themes and key messages in your promotion activities.
Week 1 theme: May 6-10: Reaching key populations and high-impact settings
- Increasing access to vaccination, testing, and treatment to key populations and settings can prevent the spread of viral hepatitis for everybody.

Week 2 theme: May 13-17: Protecting young families and pregnant persons
- To protect young families, CDC recommends screening all pregnant patients for hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

Week 3 theme: May 20-24: Accelerating hepatitis C point-of-care testing to expand test-to-cure
- Hepatitis C is a deadly disease. Point-of-care testing can build the bridge to life-saving treatment for those who need it.

Participate on a webinar
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) will host a webinar on Tuesday, May 7 at 1:00 p.m. ET titled “Syndemic Approaches: Integrating Hepatitis C, HIV, and Other Infectious Disease Testing And Prevention Services into Substance Use Disorder Treatment Programs.”
The Bureau of Primary Health Care (BPHC) will host a webinar on Tuesday, May 14 at 1:00 p.m. ET titled: “The Role of Community Health Centers in Eliminating Hepatitis C in the United States.”
The American Liver Foundation (ALF) will host a webinar on Thursday, May 16 at 3:00 p.m. ET titled: “Updates on Hepatitis B & C for Patients.”
The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID), the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) and the Hepatitis B Foundation will host a webinar on Tuesday, May 21 at 2:00 p.m. ET titled: “Preventing hepatitis B infection in US Adults.”
Spread the word
- Learn more about CDC’s commitment to eliminating viral hepatitis in the US.
- Share the ABCs of Viral Hepatitis to help others learn facts about the three most common types of viral hepatitis in the United States.
- Register your testing services by visiting https://gettested.cdc.gov and fill out the online form.
- Access and share materials about hepatitis B for Asian and African immigrant audiences.
- Access and share materials about hepatitis C for health care providers from Know More Hepatitis.
- Find resources about hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C for clinicians and the public.
Share these graphics and posts on social media to promote Hepatitis Awareness Month and National Hepatitis Testing Day. We recommend using the following hashtags: #HepAware2024, #HepatitisAwarenessMonth, and #Hepatitis.
