The Issue

• Construction workers have the highest suicide rates among major occupational groups.

What We Did

  • We analyzed data from the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) during 2022–2023 to characterize suicide deaths among construction workers and compared the circumstances surrounding these deaths with other workers. We also examined narratives to better understand work related contributors to these deaths.

What We Found

  • Circumstances such as recent arguments, intimate partner problems, alcohol problems, and other substance abuse were more frequently reported among construction workers compared with other workers. Conversely, current and past mental health-related circumstances were less likely to be reported among construction workers.

What This Means

  • Addressing specific suicide risks and protective factors among construction workers is essential for developing focused workplace prevention strategies and support initiatives aimed at reducing suicide rates within this population.
