Clinical COVID-19 Complications in the COVID-19 Hospitalization Surveillance Network (COVID-NET) — United States October 2024 – May 2025
- Presentation Day/Time: Wednesday, April 22, 1:45 PM
- Presenter: Christopher Luthers, PhD, EIS officer assigned to the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, Coronavirus and Other Respiratory Viruses Division
The Issue
- Complications from COVID-19 continue to cause severe illness and strain healthcare systems. CDC’s COVID-NET conducts surveillance for COVID-19-associated hospitalizations, capturing diagnoses of clinical complications from two sources: International Classification of Diseases-10-Clinical Modification (ICD-10) discharge diagnosis codes and hospital discharge summaries (DS).
What We Did
- We assessed the sensitivity of each source in detecting COVID-19 hospitalization complications.
What We Found
- ICD-10 codes were more sensitive than DS abstractions in capturing clinical complications. Sensitivity, however, varied by organ system and specific diagnosis.
What This Means
- These findings can help optimize capture of clinical complications to enhance understanding of patient outcomes and help support health care decision making.
