Tribal Public Health Data Advancement Toolkit

About

  • The Tribal Public Health Data Advancement Toolkit is a self-guided resource for tribal public health authorities to assess their data system capacity, create action plans, and identify priorities.
  • The toolkit features five key topic areas: data governance, IT governance, policy, technology, and workforce.
  • The toolkit offers a self-assessment questionnaire, prioritization exercise, and an executive summary template for clear and concise reporting.

Why was this toolkit created?

The Tribal Public Health Data Advancement Toolkit was created by CDC in partnership with Chickasaw Health Consulting to address an expressed need among tribal public health authorities for more resources to think through current data system capacities.

Using findings from grey literature review input, recommendations from four tribes and two Tribal Epidemiology Centers during a toolkit pilot test, review by a Tribal Expert Working Group (TEWG), and CDC subject matter expertise, the toolkit focuses on public health activities for which a tribal public health authority may collect data and explore public health key topics.

What’s included?

The toolkit focuses on data and IT governance, policy, technology, and workforce capacity. It includes self-paced tools and templates, such as

  • A questionnaire to assess capacity and infrastructure
  • A prioritization exercise to guide decision-making
  • An executive summary template for reporting
  • A user guide for toolkit navigation

There is no cost for the toolkit. Tribal public health authorities can work at their own pace and share their findings internally. There is no data sharing required. Optional, free technical assistance is available.

How can the toolkit be used?

Findings from the self-assessment can be used to

  • Create data modernization action plans
  • Strengthen Public Health Accreditation Board applications
  • Identify activities for future funding opportunities and technical assistance needs
  • Provide data sharing and infrastructure needs with tribal leaders and partners
