2021 Project: Northern Arizona University

Viral genomic dynamics in differentially vaccinated populations

What to know

Researchers at Northern Arizona University monitored two populations on opposite vaccination schedules and compared their impact on SARS-CoV-2 transmission. One site monitored vaccinated residents in two long-term care facilities, and the other site monitored unvaccinated school-aged children in a school setting. The two populations provided an ideal opportunity to explore the impacts of vaccination on viral evolution, infection rates, and transmission.

Findings on SARS-CoV-2 surveillance and investigations

This project established multiple study sites at long-term care facilities and schools and worked closely with administrators at the facilities and the school district COVID response team to provide biweekly testing and genomic surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory viruses and bacteria.

New SARS-CoV-2 dashboards and websites

This project developed two dashboards for public health officials at our target facilities to enable them to monitor levels and patterns of infection at their respective facilities:

  1. COVID-19 monitoring at schools in the Flagstaff Unified School District
  2. COVID-19 monitoring at long-term care facilities in Maricopa County
