Preventing Diabetes along the U.S.-Mexico Border in Arizona
"Basically, what is needed is the family or the people who live in the same house and eat the same food, they need to know, all of them need to know how to cook and how to eat healthy. It's not just for the patient with diabetes to eat healthy, but we also want the family members to eat healthy in order to prevent the diabetes. So, it's diabetes management and prevention.
And of course it's not just the diet, it's the exercise, communication in the family to support each other. In terms of mental health, it's very important that the family members know how to deal with the stress, the stress of having the diabetic patient in the family, and so communication and problem solving and goal setting, that is most important. So it should make a difference if you have a patient who has the support of the family or the household members or maybe very close friends, and the patient who is out there by him or herself and just struggles to do it and just can't."
"I was born and raised in Chihuahua and I came to the United States when I was 33 years old. I have been 25 years in the United States. We, because of the area, we have a lot of you know, Hispanic women, Hispanic population. They feel that we were helping them. Because we're talking the same language. I was mature, so they trust. As long as you gain that trust in the community, you are a resource. They know that if they need something... but you have to be very persistent, even with the people. To go and tell them, you know, it's for your good, please come to the classes. Because sometimes they got sick, they are depressed, you know, they don't want to do anything. So you have to go and perk them up, and tell them. And then when they are here, they say, 'Oh, you were right, it's so good to be here.'"

"I got very good habits, I'm still doing what I learned. Eating habits, number one, and exercising. I've been doing my walking ever since. I skipped one or two days, but I'm doing good with my walk and my exercise. My dancing, because I got that CD, so now I dance all around the house, yeah."
