In collaboration with Georgia State University, researchers developed the TeenSmart program to help young people, aged 12–15 years, resist or discontinue alcohol and substance use, violence, unsafe sexual practices, and other behaviors that put them at risk for disease or disability. The program is based on the book, Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen R. Covey (New York: Simon and Schuster, 1989). Activities are designed to help young people reduce stress, improve interpersonal communication, develop decision-making skills, and have a healthy lifestyle. The program is being tested with minority youths who participate in the Atlanta Boys and Girls Clubs and who attend middle schools in DeKalb County, Georgia.
