Researchers established a national training center to provide annual skill-building opportunities for state health agency personnel and other tobacco control advocates. The training center conducts week training programs for all 50 states and several territories. The week-long training includes 10 courses on key topics such as advocacy and policy development, program development and evaluation, youth tobacco prevention, epidemiology and surveillance skills, protection from environmental tobacco smoke, coalition building, and principles of marketing and health communication. Each course combines in-depth training, problem-solving exercises, and guest lectures, in addition to opportunities for networking and ongoing collaboration. By the end of training, participants are able to design, implement, and evaluate effective tobacco prevention and control strategies. Researchers also plan to offer follow-up training and additional coursework through distance and Web-based learning.
