Researchers reviewed studies conducted between 1980 and 2000 to determine the benefits of physical activity for older adults. The reviewers also identified the type, frequency, and intensity of physical activity that older adults need to maintain and improve their health, physical strength, stability, and psychological well-being. The research staff, in collaboration with a panel of experts, analyzed and reported their findings.* The panel recommended that the researchers disseminate the report to the National Institute on Aging, National Arthritis Association, National Diabetes Association, American College of Sports Medicine, managed care settings, physicians, other health professionals, and health care policymakers as well.
