Community Health
Whole community approaches to improving individual and family health are often more effective than programs that focus on individuals health behaviors, particularly in low-income communities. Researchers are identifying which characteristics of community-based health promotion campaigns enhance a community’s social capital (defined here as processes among community residents and organizations that enhance the community’s ability to achieve its goals. Researchers are limiting their assessment of social capital to grassroots organizations, and conducting the assessment in four urban neighborhoods of Chicago. The project’s results will help clarify how health promotion programs and the social capital of grassroots organizations interact to improve community health.
