Researchers systematically reviewed articles published in peer-reviewed journals from 1966 to early 2001 that concerned obesity prevention and control. Studies were eligible for review if they were community- or population-based, followed study participants for at least six months, and used clearly defined interventions, outcomes, and controls. Five major databases were searched; over 550 articles were retrieved, and about 350 articles met the criteria for review. The studies were 1) categorized as school, worksite, community, or healthcare system interventions and 2) summarized by setting, intervention methods, populations studied, and sample size. Some findings and recommendations have already been presented to CDC’s Community Guide to Preventive Services Task Force for inclusion in the guide’s chapter on obesity prevention and control.
