Researchers are evaluating the feasibility of educating and coaching physicians to improve informed decision-making about prostate cancer screening among their patients. In phase I, 25 physicians will be surveyed about their interest in learning about the subject. In phase II, an educational intervention, consisting of a 90-minute workshop and 8 hours of observed clinic time, will be conducted with 20 physicians. Visits with 10 patients before and after the workshop, will be audiotaped for each physician. The tapes will be analyzed for physicians’ knowledge, attitudes, and intentions toward informed decision-making for prostate cancer screening as well as their communication skills for this complex decision. This project will help determine how many physicians need to be involved in a comparable future project to increase patients’ informed decision-making for prostate cancer screening.
