Researchers and their community partners are conducting two projects to improve the health status of urban residents in Seattle. The project, Promoting Assets Across Cultures, is designed to reduce ethnic tension in three low-income housing sites. At each site, youth teams are learning leadership skills and healthy development; parent groups are modeling positive, inter-ethnic relations. To foster cooperation among residents, groups at each site are completing three activities. Results will be presented to the Seattle Housing Authority and Police Department to determine whether new housing and environmental policies can help enhance the health of Seattle’s low-income residents. A companion project, Rainier Beach Community Education, resulted in a program to enhance parents’ involvement in their children’s education, encourage and enable older students to tutor younger students, and provide a variety of educational and job training opportunities for both young people and adults.
