Researchers designed and are testing a program to help parents become comfortable and competent discussing sexual issues with their adolescents (grades 6 through 10). The program’s overall goal is to reduce sexual risk behaviors and promote healthy sexual development among adolescents. Parents attend eight 1-hour sessions where they learn how to build sound relationships with their children, be effective listeners, and help their children be assertive and make appropriate decisions related to sexual situations. All sessions are held over the lunch hour at selected work sites in Los Angeles County where the parents are employed. Preliminary results show good attendance and high satisfaction with the program. Future analyses will reveal the extent to which parents used skills learned in the program and whether the program influenced adolescents’ sexual behavior.
