CDC Global HIV/AIDS Activities - Central American Regional Office
Partnering to Fight HIV/AIDS
The CDC Central American regional office opened in 2003 to help strengthen,
facilitate and coordinate strategic information and prevention strategies to
respond to the HIV epidemic in the region. In collaboration with other US
Government agencies, CDC provides critical support for HIV surveillance efforts
including building human resource capacity in surveillance. CDC is also working
to strengthen capacity for laboratory and monitoring and evaluation throughout
the region.
In 2003, US President George W. Bush announced the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Central American regional office became a part of this unified US Government effort to turn the tide against the epidemic
