bullet African Americans: Overview, Transmission, Prevention Challenges, CDC Response, and Resources
bullet Minority AIDS Initiative: To enhance HIV prevention efforts for communities of color in three categories: 1) technical assistance and infrastructure support; 2) increasing access to prevention and care; and 3) building stronger community linkages. See next two items for programs funded in part through this initiative.
bullet Capacity Building Assistance to Improve the Delivery and Effectiveness of HIV Prevention Services for Racial/Ethnic Minority Populations: To increase the effectiveness of HIV prevention services, strengthen organizational infrastructure, and increase community awareness and involvement in HIV prevention in communities of color
bullet HIV Prevention Projects for Community-Based Organizations (CBOs): To support CBOs that provide HIV prevention services to members of racial/ethnic minority communities who are at high risk for HIV infection. CBOs targeting high-risk groups, regardless of race/ethnicity, are also supported.
bullet National Partnerships for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Prevention With a Focus on Business and Labor, Youth at High Risk, and Migrant Workers: To help address gaps in leadership and technical assistance in the development and delivery of HIV prevention services targeted to high-risk youth and migrant workers, many of whom are Hispanic/Latino
bullet Minority HIV/AIDS Research Initiative (MARI): To obtain information on specific gaps in HIV/AIDS research in African-American and Hispanic populations, and increase the number of racial and ethnic researchers who are capable of independently conducting HIV research
bullet HIV/AIDS in Racial and Ethnic Minorities: Supplemental issue of the Journal of the National Medical Association (July 2005)
bullet Operational Research Among People of Color: To evaluate the use of rapid HIV tests in screening for HIV infection among African-American and Latino/Hispanic populations in Dade County, Florida
bullet Demonstration Projects for Implementation of Rapid HIV Testing in Alternative Venues and Populations: To demonstrate new models for diagnosing HIV infection, a priority strategy in the context of CDC’s initiative, “Advancing HIV Prevention: New Strategies for a Changing Epidemic.” Students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Native Americans, and migrant farm workers are among the communities targeted.
bullet Research Fellowship on HIV Prevention in Communities of Color: To increase the number of racial and ethnic minority scientists with expertise in conducting research in communities of color using the fundamental tools and techniques of public health research and practice
STDs

bullet Comprehensive STD Prevention Services (CSPS): To assist STD programs to design, implement, and evaluate comprehensive STD prevention services, including strategies specific to the prevention of STD-related infertility, as well as the elimination of syphilis, particularly in racial and ethnic minority groups most affected by these diseases
bullet Syphilis Elimination: To reduce primary and secondary syphilis cases by improving access to high quality, culturally sensitive prevention and care services; providing education about preventing syphilis in minority communities; and strengthening outbreak response preparedness
bullet Interagency Agreement with the Indian Health Service (IHS): To reduce the incidence of STDs among American Indians and Alaska Natives through disease intervention, community-based training, and public health research
bullet Human Papillomavirus Research: To reduce the proportion of American Indian, African-American, Hispanic, and Caucasian women with human papillomavirus-related conditions
bullet STD/HIV Prevention Training Centers: To form a national training network to design, deliver and evaluate training that targets health care providers and prevention specialists who serve people in need of STD/HIV services, many of whom are members of racial and ethnic minorities

bullet Executive Orders and Racial and Ethnic Minority Initiatives: NCHSTP participates in White House and Departmental Initiatives aimed at improving the ability of educational institutions to serve racial and ethnic minorities and addressing the health and human service concerns of racial and ethnic minorities
bullet Tuskegee University National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care: With support from NCHSTP, the Bioethics Center focuses on disadvantaged communities and vulnerable populations in order to understand bioethics issues involving their health and to act so as to eliminate inequities, such as health disparities; to correct injustices in public health measures and public policy; to empower these peoples; and to ameliorate other health-related issues of bioethics concern
bullet Public Health & Criminal Justice Website: To foster collaboration between public health organizations and the criminal justice system (incarcerated persons are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS, STDs, and TB)
bullet Education about STD and HIV for Black State Legislators: To educate African-American state legislators and other stakeholders on HIV/AIDS, syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases; collaborate with non-governmental organizations engaged in HIV/AIDS, syphilis and other STD prevention efforts; and collaborate with community leaders around HIV/AIDS and other STD prevention efforts
