Preventive Medicine Residency and Fellowship (PMR/F)

Developing Public Health Leaders

The PMR/F includes two preventive medicine programs that provide hands-on experiences in public health agencies at the federal, state, and local levels. Our graduates are poised to assume leadership roles in public health.

The programs consist of a residency (PMR) for physicians only and a fellowship (PMF) for physicians and other health professionals.

PMR/F activities include:

  • Designing, implementing, and evaluating public health programs
  • Developing or analyzing health policy
  • Managing public health and preventive medicine projects
  • Bridging medical and public health sectors to improve wellness
  • Developing and applying leadership skills

Residency

The PMR is a 24-month nationally accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) graduate medical education program for physicians. It meets the residency requirement of the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM), in the specialty of Public Health and General Preventive Medicine.  Select candidates can be considered for one year of residency training.

Fellowship

The PMF is a 12-month program open to the following professionals:

  • Veterinarians
  • Dentists
  • Registered nurses
  • Physician assistants
  • International medical graduates (physicians) who have no ACGME- or American Osteopathic Association (AOA)-accredited postgraduate clinical training

Preventive Medicine Practitioners Needed

A 2007 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report documented shortages of trained public health workers, including public health and preventive medicine physicians. CDC offers opportunities to train in a high demand specialty and provide a critical service to communities and the nation. Learn more about the IOM report.
