Cancer
Fewer than 30 percent of Americans over age 50 years are being screened for colorectal cancer. Flexible sigmoidoscopy (FS), which can be done by primary care physicians in their offices, may increase screening rates. Researchers are testing an FS training model among practicing physicians in small, rural communities in Colorado and with community-based practitioners in Alabama. The training includes education, skill development, and supervision by an expert endoscopist. The trained physicians are expected to use FS with asymptomatic patients aged 50 to 75 years to increase cancer control in primary care settings.
