This study will evaluate the effect of a Web site, Prostate Cancer Screening Online—an educational program developed by Baylor College of Medicine emphasizing patients’ informed decision-making about prostate cancer. The online resource center is for primary care clinicians concerned about prostate cancer screening. Investigators from the University of Texas prevention research center and Baylor College of Medicine and partners from Latinos in a Network for Cancer Control will conduct the study. The Web site will be monitored for use by physicians from 12 public and private clinics that serve Hispanic, African American, and white patients under age 50. Six physicians at each site will receive two training sessions and online assignments. Patients’ medical records will be examined for physicians’ notes on a discussion of prostate cancer screening and documentation of a prostate-specific antigen test and a digital rectal exam. Exit interviews of patients will assess their physicians’ support for informed decision-making, their own knowledge and satisfaction with the process, and their decision. Study results will be used to fine-tune the program and update it for national accessibility and dissemination.
