Three academic partners (University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Baylor College of Medicine, and University of South Carolina) and two research networks (Latinos in a Network for Cancer Control and the South Carolina Cancer Research Network) are working collaboratively to increase informed decision-making for prostate cancer screening among Hispanic and African-American men. Information gathered from Hispanic communities in El Paso, Texas, and African-American communities in Columbia, South Carolina, on prostate cancer and informed decision-making will be used to adapt existing community interventions, which will be pilot tested in two churches in Columbia and two neighborhoods in El Paso. After further modification, the interventions will be implemented in 8 churches in Columbia and 8 neighborhoods in El Paso (320 men). To participate in the intervention, men must have no self-reported history of prostate cancer or of a prostate cancer screening test and have a life expectancy of at least 10 years. This study will determine, through pre-and post-surveys, if an informed decision-making intervention done with community support will affect a man’s knowledge about prostate cancer screening and participation in a screening decision.
